San Francisco (Spanish for “Saint Francis“) is a cultural, commercial, and financial center in California. It is the 17th most populous city in the US, and the fourth in California, with 873,965 residents as of 2020. The earliest archaeological evidence of human habitation of San Francisco dates to 3000 BC, by the Yelamu group of the Ohlone people. The California Gold Rush brought a flood of treasure seekers (known as “forty-niners”, as in “1849”). Prospectors accumulated in San Francisco over rival Benicia, raising the population from 1,000 in 1848 to 25,000 by December 1849.
